or the fact that everything (coffee, lager, cheese sandwiches) seems nicer when you’re on holiday in france? it was all these things, of course, but most of all it was those two great little cars. for john, the whole experience had rolled back the years to his early 20s. ‘it almost felt like being back on a motorbike again,’ he said, ‘looking forward to the twists and turns of the back roads.’ shelagh was similarly blown away by the open-top experience. ‘a couple of years ago, we hired a speed boat on lake como. being in the mx-5 reminded me of that,’ she said. ‘sun on the face and wind in the hair, low to the ground/water behind a bug-splattered windscreen, sudden surges of power giving a rush of excitement… i don’t think the zafira is going to be quite the same!’ alas, there’s a sad postscript o this tale. a couple of months after we returned to the uk, an errant motorcyclist rode smack into the side of our euphonic. fortunately no-one was hurt – except the poor little mazda. a category d write-off, the special paint meant it would have cost a fortune to have a full respray, so it was sold on to the same cambridgeshire-based specialist who had lent us the eunos roadster. i’m sure it will surface again one day, hopefully to be enjoyed by a new owner. and us? we’re currently mx-5-less. but i have a feeling that, when spring approaches, i’ll be searching the classifieds again for mazda number four. after all, our next adventure awaits… this story is reprinted from the april 2016 issue of soft top hardtop, the mx-5 owners club’s monthly printed magazine. members can access stht online for free here. ... read more... why the mx-5 is just as much fun off road as on – with video proof why don’t we see more gravel rally prepared mx-5s? small, light, and rear-wheel drive. these are the three things that are essential for a fun gravel rally car, so why don’t we see more mx-5s taking to the forests and special stages of the world? the obvious answer is that they are not designed for the rough and tumble of rallying, but then again, nothing is. any car, even the famous subaru wrx and mitsubishi evo, requires full preparation before it can tackle the special stage. chassis strengthening, sump guards, underbody protection, heavy duty rally specific suspension, an extensive roll cage, winged racing seats and high-quality wiring looms are essential, and that’s before you even think about getting decent power from the engine. the reality of rallying is that it puts monumental stresses and strains on the car, and most competitive rally cars require extensive rebuilds every few seasons, if not more frequently. so, an mx-5 can be made to last, as can almost anything. the biggest concern is probably a lack of outright speed. while smiles are all that count on the road and usually at a track day too, rallying is all about the stopwatch. the mx-5 is one of the most tuneable platforms out there, but most of the modifications which enable them to go fast on the circuit are either not suitable or not allowed for rallying. engine swaps and heavy modifications are not permitted in most championships, and any aerodynamic additions would likely be ripped off on the first jump. it also comes down to cost. the amount of time, effort and money that it would take to make an mx-5 properly competitive would be the same, if not more, than what you’d spend on a turbocharged four-wheel drive vehicle, which would be far faster. mx-5s have famously found great success in american rallycross competition, where the relatively smooth tracks mean minimal modifications are required, but they remain a rare sight on special stage rallies. however, there is a law of the mechanical world which states that if it exists, someone, somewhere, will have raced it. and it’s the same with rally cars. the mx-5 might not be a popular platform for use as a gravel rally car, but that’s not to say that nobody has done it. please enjoy this fine selection of mx-5s having a great deal of fun off the road. rally rules were changed several years ago in australia to encourage the use of two-wheel drive vehicles in a bid to reduce cost, slow vehicle speed and to increase competition. the mx-5 se is an australia-only turbocharged version of the mk2, of which a small batch was built locally by mazda motorsport, and fits perfectly with the nature of the local rally rules, which limit modifications. it is in this turbocharged form that the mk2 mx-5 is most competitive, and we think it would be an absolute hoot to drive sideways on the loose australian stages. it is not the only turbocharged mk2 mx-5 currently competing in australia – just listen to the crack of antilag echoing through the forest. mx-5 rallying is not just relegated to the dirt, and in this clip, we can marvel at a gorgeously prepared mk1 taking on the 2016 coppa pedavena rally. light pods are a rare addition to the mk1, but we say that there needs to be more of it! staying on tarmac but switching to germany and a blue mk2, we see team balduf/maier getting some huge airtime at rallyesprint oberderdingen in 2014. the same car also competes on the dirt, and in this clip we see the mk2 attacking the road with a little more sideways angle. of course, off-road fun in your miata needn’t be limited to special stages or licensed events, and in america, the cult of the ‘apocalypse’ miata is really taking off. there are countless off-road videos on youtube, but this is one of our favourites. have you had any experience taking your mx-5 off road? let us know in the comments below!... read more... from the archive – discovering the mx-5 for the first time this story is reprinted from the april 2016 issue of soft top hardtop, the mx-5 owners club’s monthly printed magazine. members can access stht online for free here. words by james vicker-craddock of the south-west area when was the last time you got in the car just to drive? my daily commute, taking around 40 minutes each way, usually involves a nose to tail traffic, mind-numbing journey. so it’s time to start enjoying being behind the wheel again by officially designating it a hobby. my objective was to buy a second car for use only at the weekend. the chosen car would need to be a pleasure to drive and put a big smile on my face. my budget was modest so i wanted something that was not only affordable to buy but reliable and cheap to run. after a little research it didn’t take long to realise that the mazda mx-5 ticked all of the boxes. a lightweight and balanced roadster with rear wheel drive and an equal 50/50 weight distribution was exactly what i was looking for. after trawling through internet sites and forums i found a mk1 which was being sold locally. it had lived in the garage for 20 years and was sold with a full mazda service history. perfect. i bought the car in the autumn so spent the first few months having a general clean up and replacing some interior trim parts such as the gear stick gaiter and painting the discoloured ashtray. the first owner of the car had a dog that upon returning home from a journey would become excited and sink its teeth into the door cards. i found a lot of pleasure in tinkering over the winter (and still have plenty to do) but when the sun started shining in the spring i wanted to know what the mx-5 was really like to drive. after some driving on local roads and meeting up with the local mx-5 oc members, a friend of mine suggested a trip to the test track at the haynes international motor museum in sparkford, somerset. the track is a tight twisty low-speed course that is perfectly suited to the mx-5. so the three of us booked it for the morning with two peugeot 205s and my mazda mx-5 taking to the track. cars were allowed on the track one at a time and timing or competition was not permitted. however, that didn’t matter to us as we were all keen to see what our cars could do away from the dangers of the public roads. so, did the mx-5 live up to its reputation? yes! the direct steering and equal front and rear weight distribution meant that the car was neutral, predictable and didn’t suffer from copious amounts of understeer unlike the hatchbacks also out on track. the 1.6 engine came alive above 3000 rpm and the short throw gear stick made acceleration out of the corners and along the short straights really fun giving no break from the enjoyment. in terms of grins per pound the mx-5 is unbeatable and my first experience out on track will give me something to think about during the daily commute! this story is reprinted from the april 2016 issue of soft top hardtop, the mx-5 owners club’s monthly printed magazine. members can access stht online for free here. ... read more... would these additions make the mk4.5 perfect? we’ve been sitting pretty with the mk4 nd mx-5 for nearly four years now. and as much as we love the angular looks and performance from the 1.5 and 2.0-litre engines we can’t help but look to the future. like with the mk2 and mk3 cars we are expecting a mid-lifecycle refresh around the car’s fifth birthday, so what are we looking for from the mk4.5 or nda, or whichever title mazda give this incarnation? given mazda are aiming to position themselves towards the upper echelons of luxury japanese cars, wouldn’t it be fun to have the mk4.5 in more colours? we’ve enjoyed a series of cool greys and moody tones, but after the launch of the rf sport black in, ahem, eternal blue it would be nice to see some punchy colours across the board. could you imagine a yellow nd with dark wheels and the factory aero bits? what a combination! how about a forest / dark green on the angular mk4 fascia? unbeatable! check out the full thread on our forum here. much attention has been given to the innovations mazda has made in their skyactive engines, the variable compression skyactiv-x engine mazda is working on would be an unbeatable addition to the mx-5 family. while such changes are unlikely for the facelift mk4 given mazda’s incremental approach to improvements, there are rumours of a power hike… if the internet is to be believed mazda is planning to boost the power output from 155bhp to 181bhp. mazda has stated that the skyactiv-x engine won’t be making it to the mx-5 any time soon, so where will these performance gains come from? the 2.0 litre skyactiv unit in its most powerful guise produces 162 bhp in some mazda-3 models, so it’s anyone’s guess where the extra power might come from – forced induction? whisper it but it’s a possibility. would mazda sacrifice the purist thrills of the naturally aspirated mx-5 for power and efficiency gains? we’re not so sure. due to their incremental approach, mazda has been improving the suspension each year on the mk4 so it’s unlikely any significant upgrades are coming. it would be nice to see the option of some more bespoke suspension setups, or maybe a fully adjustable unit on future mx-5s to allow the enthusiasts to configure their cars to their liking. more customisation would be something we’d love to see in the future as well, as a company with premium ambitions mazda could offer a greater variety of custom touches to cars, similar to how cars are offered in the u.s. this is before we even mention the carbon hardtop the abarth 124 has just received… the brembo and bbs kit would be very well received on this side of the atlantic, as well as the option to specify uprated seats. maybe an increased variety of colours coupled with more custom touches and a power boost might usher in a new wave of mx-5 owners? the spirit of the original mx-5 is not lost in the mk4 but there are more than a few ways that mazda can broaden the appeal with future mx-5s. typically we wait around five years to see the facelifted mx-5 so we wait with baited breath to see what we are offered from the factory, here’s hoping it makes the already great mk4 an even more enjoyable platform! words by george cheetham photos by george cheetham, andrew coles, iain fleming and leftlanenews.com did you know we have all issues of soft top hardtop available online back to 2015?
